CHAPTER 9
The Underground
Rail System
Viv was worried.
Supplies were dwindling down, and she knew they would not make it until America had begun to recover.
It was simple mathematics.
There was only a couple monthsâ worth of food left, maybe a couple weeks of water after that, and the toilet paper could run out as soon as next week, prompting thoughts of using books, magazines, even clothing to wipe with.
Then what would they do?
They had done everything they could do to conserve what they had, making it last longer than she ever would have thought possible with the extra mouths to feed, but alas, soon the day would come when they would meet the same fate as the other neighbors in the hood that had run out of food and water.
Would they become the hunted or the hunters?
The latter would be something they could never do, no matter how hungry they became.
The thought of killing someone that wasnât trying to kill them first was abhorrent to her.
The thought of eating someone was beyond abhorrentâ¦it was an abomination to Christ!
Somehow, someway, they would have to think of something, somehow to survive this and continue on for her children, and for Julieâs children.
She had resigned herself to the fact as she knew it, her husband was not going to be coming home to save them from this wretched end; however, they would have to figure it out.
Viv was dying for clean clothes to wear and to be able to take a bath.
Down by Cherry Knolls Park was a creek where some were washing their clothes, but it was just too much of a risk. Some were even bathing in it, which seemed even riskier.
Besides, leaving the house would put their house at risk of being robbed and the last of their supplies stolen.
The natural gas had run out and they were now cooking their food on the gas grill in the backyard. The saving grace was they were not grilling meat, but instead boiling water and dumping the freeze-dried contents of the cans into the pot, then covering the pot with a lid so the food would be hydrated and stay hot at the same time, thereby keeping the aromas from spilling out into the neighborhood.
Still, even that seemed to be much riskier than doing everything in the house.
Most of the surrounding neighbors had died, some recently, creating new odors circulating through the air of the neighborhood.
Though the neighbors still alive were suffering greatly due to malnutrition and dehydration, they managed to survive by pailing out water from the creek, catching frogs, and catching an occasional squirrel that had managed not to be killed yet.
The suburbs, along with the cities, had the worst of it.
At least in the outskirts, there were deer to hunt and lakes to drink from.
Not so in the suburbs, such as Centennial, Littleton, and Lakewood, which saw more than their share of murder and mayhem.
